Portability
One of the first questions we are asked when riding around town is "What happens when you run out of power?" The answer is simple: “You can fold the YikeBike up and catch a taxi or public transport and continue on”. Easy. You can take it everywhere you need to go, never have to worry about leaving it out of your sight, and no more bike locks!

Visibility
The YikeBike lights are on all the time when riding around town and are visible from hundred of meters away, making others more aware of your presence, speed and direction when riding. Turning signals, rear lights and hazard light functions are included.
Presence
There’s no hiding it! The YikeBike sound is unique! And we love it. Have you ever ridden your bicycle around town and passed a parked car and encountered an inconsiderate driver who opens their door on you? Driving around on a YikeBike you often notice that people hear you coming before they see you, inherently increasing your road presence.
Usability
Ever have to pick up your car across town and you're running late? Need to get to a meeting where you know there is a lack of parking? Ever found yourself needing to get to that train or boat and needing to rely on that bus that gets stuck in rush hour traffic? Having a YikeBike makes getting to all meetings and public transport something you will never have to worry about.
Inspiration
The first thing you notice when riding the YikeBike is that people will be intrigued and will ask you lots of questions about the YikeBike. It is a great conversation starter and when you fold your YikeBike up in front of them their jaws will drop and suddenly the YikeBike's design makes sense, showing of its portability, usability and all round coolness.
Reliability
The YikeBike is built to last! Quality is paramount and our engineering team test the bike constantly for toughness and reliability. The test facility at YikeBike Headquarters has simulated over 15,000km of riding by a 120kg YikeBiker riding over bumpy terrain and accelerating to full speed and braking to a full stop on a specially made treadmill, simulating years of actual use.
Easy
The YikeBike is different and the perception of some when they first see it may be that it looks hard to ride. While it is true that it is different and it’s design is unique it is remarkably easy to learn how to ride it. A few minutes in an open space will see you riding it with confidence, and loving the thrill of zooming along like you are floating on air.
Inherently Stable
The YikeBike has been designed to be ridden at speed without having to worry about bumps and potholes. The larger 20” front wheel can safely drive over most bumps and through most potholes, and the rear wheel easily follows.
YikeBike is the world's smallest and lightest electric bike that is designed to be folded or unfolded in about 15 seconds. It is light and portable enough to be carried onto a bus, train, boat, elevator, or stored in the trunk of a car or under a desk.. It costs less than 9 cents per day to operate so is a fast, safe, cost-effective, eco-friendly way to navigate through cities and towns.
Summary: In no more than 100 words, please summarise the environmental technology, innovation, process or general advance, where applicable YikeBike is the world’s smallest lightest electric bike that is designed to seamless link with public transport and can be stored anywhere. It costs less than 9 cents per day to operate so is a fast, safe, cost-effective, eco-friendly way to navigate their cities and towns.
Project status: What stage has your technology, innovation or project reached? Please set out clearly all empirical evidence of the innovation, third party verification and the stage that the roll-out has reached. YikeBike has been in development for 6 years and is now offering two models of YikeBike that are sold in 32 countries around the world. The ‘Carbon’ model weighs just 10.8kg and is mainly constructed from at latest carbon fiber technology and has been in production for one year. It has already been in Time magazine, taking 15th in the inventions of the year 2009 and in the Guinness Book of Records as the smallest folding electric bike in the world. The new ‘Fusion’ model offers the strength and affordability of alloy materials, weighing in at 14kg. The Fusion is already in full production and is priced at almost half the Carbon model uses hydro formed high tensile aluminium alloy and composite reinforced polymer. Weighing 14kg the fusion is 3kgs heavier then the Carbon but still folds into the same small portable shape.
Description: In no more than 500 words, please describe the environmental technology or innovation in sufficient detail for the context and the capabilities to be understood and evaluated. Please be as specific as possible about the issue being addressed and the solution, where applicable. Please be clear about what your particular input is or has been. YikeBike is a statement about using smart technology to solve the problems of our increasingly congested, polluted, stressful cities. It is the first commercial expression of the mini-farthing concept, created up by a bunch of successful entrepreneurs, engineers and dreamers. We sat down to try and answer:
• What is the simplest way to get from A to B with the aid of a machine?
• What is the smallest wheel you can have to get a stable, safe, comfortable ride?
• Can you make something small enough to be able to go with you anywhere in a city?
• Wonder if we could make a unicycle dramatically easier to ride and fold? We were intrigued by creating something that could dramatically change urban transport, enabling city dwellers a fast, safe and easy way to navigate their environment. The result was the mini-farthing concept and its first expression, the YikeBike. It employs state-of-the-art technology, engineering and industrial design to create a new class of personal transport.
Innovative aspect: Please set out clearly the innovative aspect or the technological advance or the change that is the key element. This should cover both what it is and how it does it, with a clear description of the innovation itself. Our aim when we started this project was to design something that could become the most commonly owned transport device in the world and we think we may be on to something. That is such a bold statement as to be laughable but read on and feel free to let us know what you think.
The most commonly owned form of transport in the world today is the bicycle – there are about 2 billion with another 130 million sold per year. The modern bicycle is a truly remarkable design and the basic configuration has not changed for 120 years. The most commonly sold bicycles types are mountain bikes (equivalent of 4WD) or racing bike configuration (stable at 50-60 km/hr) neither of which is ideal for a modern congested city. Our aim was to design a personal transportation device that was as safe, maneuverable and as easy to ride as a bike but was designed for lower speeds 20km/h and vastly smaller so that it can be easily taken anywhere in a congested city.
Rather than take a normal bike and crunch it up like most folding bike designs we took a step back to see if there was another safe stable configuration that is vastly smaller when folded.
We started from the assumption that you need a decent sized front wheel so you can go through pot holes, up curbs and over bumps in a safe comfortable way. You can see from the development history that it took a lot of trying to find a stable easy to ride design. Although we started with pedal only versions we found that we could make a smaller lighter more useful version using latest battery, motor and controller technologies.
Benefits: Please try to quantify, wherever possible and applicable, the benefits that the innovation will provide. This is a key opportunity to put forward the strength of your entry. The YikeBike can be folded or unfolded in about 15 seconds, and is light and portable enough to be carried onto a bus, train or elevator, or stored in the trunk of a car or under a desk. Its portability also means that consumers need never to worry about the storing, securing, or possible theft or vandalism of their YikeBike – as they would with a regular bicycle.
“I am having a great time riding my YikeBike as it works well in our City of North Vancouver urban environment. Being so portable, the YikeBike is easily used with our public transit system of buses, SeaBus and SkyTrain to get me around our Metro Vancouver region. It is certainly turning a lot of heads and I feel like a celebrity whenever I stop. Riding the YikeBike fits into my philosophy of being more sustainable and reducing my carbon footprint.”
